At The Midwife's Nest, we're a private midwifery practice based in Cairns, providing personalised pregnancy and postnatal care without the need for a GP referral. Led by Narelle Ashworth, a Registered Nurse and Endorsed Midwife, we support women from the moment of a positive pregnancy test through early pregnancy, ongoing antenatal care and the weeks following birth. We work alongside your GP and the Cairns public maternity service, so you have continuity and a familiar face at every appointment, right through to labour and birth at your chosen hospital. Nest Beginnings is designed for the first trimester, giving you dedicated support from your positive pregnancy test through to around 14 weeks. We review your blood tests, ultrasound results and screening options, and provide the education and referrals you need before transitioning to your chosen ongoing prenatal care provider. Nest Journey offers continuity with a familiar midwife throughout your pregnancy, with regular antenatal reviews, birth planning and close collaboration with Cairns Hospital and your GP. It carries through into your early postnatal care, supporting you and your baby after birth. Antenatal and postnatal care.
Nest Support offers individual midwifery consultations at specific points in your pregnancy or after birth, for women who'd value additional support without ongoing comprehensive care. From your positive test
You can call us directly — no GP referral is required. We confirm your pregnancy, talk through your dating scan and arrange your first blood tests.
Weeks 6–14
We review your results together and explain your screening options in plain language, so decisions in the first trimester are made with time and information behind them.
Weeks 14–36
Regular reviews with the same midwife, alongside your GP and the Cairns public maternity service, tracking your health and your baby's growth.
Weeks 36–40
Birth planning, preparation and practical education for labour and birth at the hospital you have chosen.
Birth
When labour begins, your care transitions to the maternity team at your chosen hospital, who provide your labour and birth care. We stay connected through this handover so your history and preferences carry across smoothly.
The first six weeks
In-clinic reviews after discharge, covering feeding, recovery, newborn wellbeing and your own health as you settle in, with home visits available where availability allows.
